It seems obvious, right Getting the patient from point A to B safely while avoiding places that might tempt them to fall back into old habits. At its most basic level, that's it. So why couldn't they just Uber or call a friend? Because "sober transport" is much more than just a ride.
Why Use "Sober Transport?"
While in recovery, there tend to be many occasions and reasons the recovering patient requires transportation. It has been well established that this can be a point of vulnerability for the early-recovering addict. In the absence of this service, the recovering patient could easily have access to addictive drugs or alcohol as well as individuals who could adversely influence them in this critical stage of recovery.
What Does Sober Transport Provide?
A sober transportation driver is an extension of a recovery coach, not a taxi driver. They provide:
- Safe and compassionate companionship during travel.
- Counsel and encouragement to patients who are often apprehensive about a meeting or treatment appointment.
- Awareness of warning signs of relapse or possession of drugs or alcohol.
- Management of delays or itinerary changes that can cause patient stress.
